Unveiling Authenticity & Why You Should Feel Empowered By Your Second Language

Jul 30, 2024

Authenticity isn’t static; it evolves as we do. When expressing ourselves in a second language, we discover unique facets of our true selves. And shedding emotional baggage while embracing vulnerability allows our authenticity to shine. So, whether in a native tongue or another language, it’s time to celebrate the dance of freedom, discovery, and becoming that is YOU!

Unveiling Authenticity & Why You Should Feel Empowered By Your Second Language

Authenticity is not stagnant.

Authenticity changes as we evolve.

So, if you think about it, authenticity requires knowing ourselves more, and the more we know ourselves, the more we can bring our true selves to the forefront.

When we let our full beings out in public, people see what makes us unique.

That’s authenticity.

Get it?

Now, you might be thinking that this is just too darn hard to do in a foreign language, but I think it is precisely the opposite.

It’s almost like we get a fresh slate. We start again only this time we’re adults, so we have much more confidence than when we were children, teenagers, and young adults out of college.

In this month’s blog post, I’m going to talk with you about how to bring your authentic self to your communication in a second language as an adult.

Before we do, let’s take a quick look at a few things:

1. Understanding Authentic Communication

Authentic communication involves expressing yourself genuinely. It’s about being true to your thoughts and feelings.

Bonus: Authenticity fosters deeper connections and mutual understanding.

2. Challenges of Second Language Communication

I’m sure there are times when you face hurdles in English (vocabulary gaps, grammar mistakes, pronunciation and cultural differences, etc.)

But, you’ve overcome so much (think about the patience and diligence you've had to have.)

3. Embracing Imperfections

Because you’ve had no choice but to embrace mistakes as stepping-stones to improvement, your vulnerability has come through.

So, like that or not, it means your authenticity has been shining through.

4. Cultural Adaptation and Authenticity

You’ve had to adapt to cultural norms (not easy especially in The US).

Balance between fitting in and expressing your unique perspective is HUGE!

5. Building Confidence

You know I love to talk about confidence and that fuels authentic communication.

So, remember to keep practicing positive self-talk to keep that confidence alive. It’ll help you bring your best self front and center.

6. Overcoming Language Anxiety

I’ve also shared my thoughts about how nerves and excitement are the same physiological response in the body.

I can only imagine how much you’ve grown because of the anxiety that comes with speaking a foreign language all the time (I do it in Portuguese, but not like you! You have to do it in a professional setting with all the pressure and expectations.)

7. Connecting with Native Speakers

I don’t know what you think, but when you interact with diverse language users, your authenticity gets accentuated.

I feel like we get to rediscover ourselves as we expand our connections with international people, don’t you?

8. Celebrating Progress

Every effort counts and when you celebrate the small stuff, you are saying yes to YOU.

And that’s all about authenticity.

Why It’s Easier To Be Authentic In A Second Language

Psychological Distance

Speaking a second language creates a psychological distance from our native language and culture. This detachment can lead to a sense of freedom, allowing us to express ourselves more openly.

All those cultural norms, family expectations, and personal history poof into thin air if we let them.

So, let go and let your authenticity exude like no one is watching.

Reduced Emotional Baggage

As I just said, our first languages often carry emotional baggage—past experiences, memories, and associations.

Speaking a second language allows us to shed some of our skin.

We have the opportunity to approach conversations with fewer preconceptions, making it easier to express our thoughts genuinely (it’s a question of self-trust and curiosity.)

Self-Perception and Identity

As adults, we have a better understanding of our identity, values, and beliefs. This self-awareness transcends language if we let it.

In a second language, we can explore different facets of our identity without feeling bound by societal expectations.

How awesome is that idea?!

Social Expectations

In our native tongue, social norms and roles shut us down all the time. We may censor ourselves to fit in or avoid conflict.

I know this happens much more easily for me in English than it does in Portuguese.

Speaking a second language provides a fresh canvas...Ooooo, yes, a fresh canvas! We’re less likely to conform to predefined roles.

Novelty and Playfulness

Learning a new language can be an adventure. Curiosity and playfulness are definitely an approach you can take.

This mindset encourages authenticity—we learn that it’s okay to stumble, make mistakes, and be imperfect (no choice, right?)

Empathy and Humility

As language learners, we empathize with others who struggle to express themselves. We extend grace to others which can result in grace for ourselves.

This empathy fosters authenticity, as we prioritize connection over perfection.

Conclusion

Let me wrap up by saying that authenticity is NOT about fluency. It’s a whole other animal.

✔️ It’s about vulnerability which automatically comes with speaking a second language.

✔️ It’s about genuine expression which means that we go with the word that shows up and not necessarily the most sophisticated one.

✔️ It’s about present moment awareness and we all know that presence brings our communication alive.

✔️ It’s about respecting boundaries so we honor privacy and consent (big one these days!)

And finally, authenticity isn’t a rigid formula; it’s a dance of freedom, discovery, and becoming.

So, go out there this August and be yourself!
